Closely related to Nokia 2660 is Nokia 2760 – just on the gram heavier with 80.5 grams but at this time coming with a posting improved of TFT and a digital camera of resolution of VGA. This also comes with a radio from FM, Bluetooth, a spakerphne and ringtones MP3 but as with the 2660 it has there no player of multi-media and certainly no extensible memory.

The life of battery is also quoted a 7 hours talktime and a time of 13 days resource. Just with a nuance more expensive than Nokia 2660, the €90 Nokia 2760 is due appreciably better to the screen and the camera of active matrix, although the subsidy of carrier always tends to twist prices when they arrive to the consumer.

Nokia more fundamental 2660 will be available in the silver plated of black, silver plated and hot colors. 2760 slightly the more expensive will be available in blue marinates, velvet the red, the smoky gray, the black and arenaceous colors metal of gold. They are the devices with two bands of GSM – available in 850/1900 megahertz or 900/1800 megahertz according to the market.

Nokia 2760 specification:
Network:GSM 850/1900 or GSM 900/1900
Data:GPRS
Screen:128×160 pixels, 65k colours
Camera:0.3 megapixels
Size: Lightweight clamshell, 87 x 45 x 21mm / 79 grams
Bluetooth: Yes
Memory card: No
Infra-red: No
Polyphonic: Yes
Java: Yes
Battery life: 7 hours talk / 13 days standby

The 2660 and 2760 models offer the exceptional value for the money, and although their devices are little the fundamental ones compared with the majority the “half span” model on the European markets, the 2660 and 2760 are aimed at a type different of customer.

The Motorola W220 is a RAZR-like clamshell phone with a 128×128 pixel CSTN display in 65,000 colours that weighs 93 grams. It has a long battery life giving up to 8 hours talktime and 12 days standby time, and there’s a built-in FM radio. And really that’s about it.. no camera, no Bluetooth, no MP3 player. It’s only a dual-band GSM device, but it does at least have GPRS and a WAP browser.

The shocking thing is that Motorola have made no major product announcements for the GSM/3G market since January 2006 when they announced the ROKR E2, a handset so late to market that people are beginning to speculate that it might never arrive. Apart from a rash of ultra-cheap phones and colour variations of existing handsets, the W220 has been the most significant product announcement since the E2.

Motorola’s only other recent product releases are the V3i and A1200 smartphone (which is shipping in the Far East only). At Communicasia, Motorola have also announced the W375 which is basically a W220 with a VGA resolution camera.

Motorola W220 specification:
Network: GSM 900/1800
Data: GPRS
Screen: 128×128 pixels, 65k colours
Camera: No
Size: Compact clamshell 95×46x17mm / 93 grams
Bluetooth: No
Memory card: No
Infra-red: No
Polyphonic: Yes
Java: Yes
Battery life: 8 hours talk / 12 days standby

So, this is possibly the nearest thing to a new Motorola you’re going to see in the near future, slated for a Q3 2006 release.

The Samsung E420 is a low cost member of Samsung’s “La Fleur” series of fashion phones with a 128×160 pixel OLED display in 65,000 colours, a VGA resolution (0.3. megapixel) camera and that’s really about it, apart from the E420’s attractive looks.

In fact, it’s the SGH-E420’s looks that give the game away – the interior and basic specifications mark it out as an upgrade to the Samsung X400 (see below) from 2003. Yup, this is essentially a three-year-old phone with a bit of a facelift and a few new features.

Just how basic the Samsung E420 is becomes apparent when you look at what it doesn’t include – there’s no Bluetooth or MP3 player, and certainly no expandable memory.

On the other hand, the E420’s internal 2Mb of memory will be plenty given the resolution of the camera and lack of multimedia features. Samsung haven’t confirmed the weight, but given that the old X400 weighed 70 grams, you should expect the SGH-E420 to weigh in at not much more than that.

Samsung SGH-E420 specification:
Network: 900/1800/1900
Data: GPRS
Screen: 128×160 pixels, 65k colours colours (sub)
Camera: 0.3 megapixels
Size: Lightweight clamshell Size/weight tbc
Bluetooth: No
Memory card: No
Infra-red: No
Polyphonic: Yes
Java: Yes
Battery life: Not specified

Features aren’t everything though, because the Samsung E420 is designed to be a low cost handset.. although at around €190 / $220 / £115 (before tax and subsidy) the SGH-E420 looks somewhat overpriced, especially given that it doesn’t support Bluetooth. It’s an attractive phone though, and it manages to look good on both the inside and outside which is better than many rivals.
