Samsung IMAP and Exchange on PCs and Mobiles Guide
To make full use of today’s email functions, you need an email account that allows your mail to be managed on a central server. IMAP and Microsoft Exchange servers both work in this way. This document offers a brief introduction to the differences between IMAP, Exchange and POP3 email solutions. It also explains how to set up IMAP and Exchange mailboxes for the most popular business phone operating systems: Windows Mobile 6 and S60.
IMAP is short for »Internet Message Access Protocol . That sounds fairly universal, and indeed it is. This manufacturer- and application-independent protocol enables email on a mail server to be viewed and managed online. With IMAP, your email is intrinsically mobile. IMAP displays the mailboxes and messages on the email servers as if they were on a local computer. The original remains on the server at all times and any changes are recorded there. When you access the email on a computer or mobile device, you are merely downloading a copy. Information relating to the email, such as which folder it’s in and whether or not it has been read, is also saved with the original mail on the server.
This means your mailbox is always up to date and always looks the same, no matter where or on which device you view it. An alternative to accessing your email via IMAP is to use Microsoft Exchange. It too instantly mirrors local email activity on the server. IMAP and Exchange both support push email. In other words, they tell your mail program as soon as a new email arrives.
If you’re still accessing your email via POP (or POP3), it’s time to switch. The old »Post Office Protocol« only partially meets today’s email requirements. It only allows emails to be read and written locally on your email client. Equally, folders for organising your email can only be created on the client. If you access your account from multiple locations or via multiple devices, using POP3 can make managing your email a big deal.
