Today the netbook is really famous and all of the manufactures like Asus, MSI, Axioo, Acer, Lenovo and many more built the netbook series which small, light and very portable for mobile users.

But the problem is the netbook is not featuring with DVD-RW to install many popular software and also the operating system like Windows XP. I know most of you still use Windows XP rather than Vista because of the compatibiliy and also the performance. So I search through internet and I find several useful tips how to install windows XP on your netbook like Asus EEE PC or Acer Aspire One also with the video.
Thanks to the USB flash drive which now have capacity more than 1GB and now you can use it to install windows XP through USB. From AllaboutEEEPC.com you must prepare several files and also the the detail steps.
- Download the 3 files that you must have: USB_PREP8, PeToUSB and Bootsect
- Extract all of the 3 files to any folder that you want and move PeToUSB inside the USB_PREP8 folder.
- Run the ‘usb_prep8.cmd’ by double click or via command console.
- Press any key and the PeToUSB will open.
- Stick with the default settings and click Start. When done, close the window
- Open the command DOS by Start – Run – type ‘cmd’
- Change the directory to folder where you extract the bootsec tool
- Type ‘bootsect.exe /nt52 X:’ where X is the drive letter of your USB flash drive. Wait until ‘Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes’ appears.
- Go back to USB_PREP8 command window.

WOW! That was a great video. I wasted about 4 hours trying to do this before finding this video. Followed the video and got it on the first try!
Thank you!
I have an HP 2133 netbook, which comes with a 120GB hard drive. It was pre-installed with Linux. I was not happy. Linux has to be the worst operating system ever. I know its free, but its rubbish. I came to your site to hopefully find out how to change operating systems. But I just couldn’t get my head round the gist of it. Too complicated for me. But I found my own way..
To install Windows XP SP1 from CD Rom, I got an external DVD drive, downloaded the bootable bios from HP support site. Put the bios on an sd card (which had been formatted on my main PC), put that into a usb card reader and kept it aside. I plugged the DVD drive into the USB port. On starting up, and by pressing F10 when prompted I went into system configurations and changed the boot priority of the netbook to boot into USB DVD drive first. I pressed any key to let the XP disc begin Windows XP set up. I followed the instructions to wipe the partitions and format the HDD. It got as far as copying all files needed, rebooted, then had an error message with continuing installation.
So I shut it down again. When I restarted I pressed F10 and changed boot priority so the HDD booted first. Again on starting up I had an error message. So I shut down and inserted the USB card reader with the bios on the SD card. This time the netbook booted into Windows XP straight away and installation continued. I eventually got windows XP on my netbook and installed all the netbook drivers I downloaded from HP support site onto it as well. My advice to anyone is just use an external CD or DVD drive.. Much easier..
In steps (which hopefully works for other types of netbooks)..
1. Download all drivers for your netbook from product support site. Format a flash drive or memory card (you should have a USB card reader if you are using a memory card like I did) and copy the bootable bios onto it.
2. Hook up the external USB DVD drive to your netbook. On starting up go into system configurations (pressing F10 in my case when prompted) and change boot priority so it boots first.
3. When you see this – ‘Press any key to boot from CD…’ press any key. The installation disc will load all necessary files to start Windows, then follow on screen instructions to install XP how you wish to.
4. On re-booting don’t ‘Press any key to boot from CD…’ Let it boot up to where installation should be continuing. There will be an error message instead. Shut the netbook off. Insert the USB flash drive or card reader with the bootable bios on it. Turn it back on. It should boot into Windows, but if it doesn’t; turn off and back on again, go into system configurations and change boot priority so the HDD boots first. This time when switched on it should load Windows and XP set up.
5. Installation will continue. Follow all the on screen instructions. Eventually you will have Windows XP running, and all you will have to do is load your system drivers. Jobs a good’un..
Just to add, I have now registered Windows XP, updated it to SP3 and it runs beautifully.. I’m pretty pleased with myself boys and girls..
