The Archos 604 WiFi ($450) does everything you would expect from a PMP. Its 30GB hard drive can store up to 85 movies, 300,000 photos or 15,000 songs, and its 4.3-inch TFT touch screen dishes out video at 480 x 272. It plays MPEG-4 and WMV video right out of the box and will play MP3s, WMA files, and AAC music. The included Photo Viewer will show off your favorite pictures as long as they are in JPEG, BMP or PNG, and your 604 WiFi will even read PDF files. The 604 will record video in MPEG-4 with the optional DVR docking station, and will record audio through the built-in microphone.

As the name suggests, the 604 wirelessly connects to the Internet through the 802.11g band to any PC or Mac via USB, and does so with its very own Opera browser. The bright and beautiful interface gives you the option to go to your favorite site (read: Gearlog), while you listen to your favorite songs or watch your favorite movies.

The Archos 604 WiFi comes with headphones, a USB 2.0 cable, a DVR station adapter, a pouch and two styli so you don’t have to smudge the screen with fingerprints. You can preorder the 604 WiFi for $450 direct, and it will start shipping at the end of the month.

Quite a few products are available today that offer movies on-the-go, and they languish in a market that has very few dedicated customers. However, no other products are offering what Archos does, and this might be just the thing to jumpstart the PMP industry.

The T-Mobile MDA Compact III is T-Mobile’s take on the HTC P3300 Windows smartphone with GPS Satellite Navigation. As with the HTC version, the T-Mobile MDA Compact III comes with a GPS receiver and inbuilt satellite navigation.

Functionally almost identical to the P3300, the T-Mobile MDA Compact III comes with a 2.8″ 240×320 pixel touch-sensitive display, GPRS and EDGE data (but no 3G), a 2 megapixel camera, expandable memory, a multimedia player and FM radio. And because the T-Mobile MDA Compact III is a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone, it comes with a capable web browser, email client and it can also work with Microsoft Office documents.

The HTC version of this handset has WiFi, and indeed the version of the T-Mobile MDA Compact III advertised in the Netherlands and Austria specifically says that the MDA Compact III has WiFi, yet in Germany none of the material mentions WiFi support.

NaviGate factors in things like traffic jams and currently costs €0.99 per route, or €9.95 per month for T-Mobile subscribers in Germany. T-Mobile say that “memory cards or CDs containing digital street maps are not necessary” for NaviGate, although HTC said that basic TomTom maps of Western Europe are preloaded for the HTC P3300.

What’s actually in the T-Mobile MDA Compact III is a bit of a mystery. T-Mobile’s publicity is either confusing or misleading. Does the MDA Compact III have WiFi? Does it have TomTom? If it does, then it’s an attractive handset, and it’s several months ahead of the somewhat similar Nokia N95. If not.. then T-Mobile have needlessly created a crippled version of the HTC P3300 for no good reason. As we said, if you’re interested in the T-Mobile MDA Compact III, then check what you are actually getting carefully before ordering.

The Tovo t450g is a hybrid WiFi VOIP / GSM handset, that can work either on a standard mobile network or by using Voice-Over-IP on a suitable wireless ethernet connection.

As far as its GSM capabilities are concerned, the Tovo t450g is a basic but practical device with a 128×128 pixel display, 0.3 megapixel (VGA resolution) camera, tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 support and GPRS. There’s also MMS, SMS and email message capabilities plus some PIM functionality.

Tovo t450g specification:
Network: GSM 900/1800/1900 + VOIP
Data: GPRS + WiFi
Screen: 128×128 pixels, 65K colours
Camera: 0.3 megapixels
Size: Standard candy bar 106×46x18mm / weight not specified
Bluetooth: No
Infra-red: No
Polyphonic: No
Java: No
Battery life: Not specified

Businesses can centrally manage Tovo t450g devices, or it can simply be used as a consumer device. Several different t450g handset can be used on the same wireless network. Larger customers can use a virtual PABX solution to roll out multiple Tovo devices seamlessly (using the back-end technology provided by Pirelli), but one drawback for individual consumers is that the Tovo will have both a standard GSM number and a VOIP number, so it’s not quite so seamless.

Of course, this is really a VOIP handset, and the Tovo t450g has 802.11g wireless ethernet supporting WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption. As a GSM phone, the t450g is a bit basic, but it’s pretty advanced for a VOIP device and it manages to do both GSM and VOIP in a device weighing only 95 grams.

Mobiboo also offer a couple of non-GSM WiFi VOIP handsets, either directly or through specialist retailers (including some branches of Tesco). The Tovo t450g currently costs around £170 directly from the Tovo web site.

The SPH-P9000 is an EV-DO (3G CDMA) device with WiMAX (802.16) support, which means that the SPH-P9000 had high-speed data access wherever it can get a WiMAX or EV-DO signal.

It’s a hefty beast, weighing 560 grams (1lb 2oz in old money), and it measures 143×92x30mm (5.6 x 3.5 x 1.2 inches). There’s a novel folding keyboard, and the main display is a 5″ 800×480 pixel unit, and there’s a 1.3 megapixel camera facing the user. Internal storage consists of a 30Gb hard disk and the SGH-P9000 has Bluetooth too.

Samsung say that the SPH-P9000 runs Windows XP, presumably the special Windows XP Tablet Edition used of UMPC (”Project Origami”) devices. Samsung aren’t touting the SPH-P9000 as a UMPC handheld, but the specification is close enough. The inclusion of WiMAX and EV-DO directly into the device is unusual though, and it adds to the SPH-P9000’s desirability.

The Samsung SPH-P9000 does actually make voice calls, so to that extent it is also a mobile phone. But really, it’s a handheld computer with integrated telephony and mobile network connections, rather than a device like the HTC Universal which is a scaled-up phone.

The keyboard folds up when not in use, so the SPH-P9000 can be used like a more traditional tablet PC.

As it stands, the SPH-P9000 is a Korea-only device and it won’t work in most other marketplaces where GSM and UMTS are the only network carriers. However, the WiMAX and EV-DO connectivity is only a small part of the overall technology in the SPH-P9000, so we could well be seeing devices like this in the rest of the world sometimg in 2007 or 2008.
